US deputy secretary of state hails close ties with Milei’s Argentina

·

A senior US diplomat has praised the Trump administration's alignment with Argentina's government, amid a row over American remarks linking support to President Javier Milei's political future, the Buenos Aires Times reports.

Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau, speaking in Buenos Aires alongside Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno on Thursday, said no other country was as closely aligned with Washington as Argentina, and praised Milei's drive to attract foreign investment.

His visit came two days after the US ambassador, Peter Lamelas, said continued support depended on Argentina keeping to the right after the 2027 election, in which Milei is seeking another term. Quirno denied Washington had set political conditions, saying the only requirement was to stay on the path of growth and fiscal balance. The US gave Argentina a $20bn financial lifeline in 2025.
