Uninsured rate among US working-age adults rises to 11.2% as subsidies lapse

·

The share of US adults aged 19 to 64 without health insurance has risen to 11.2% this year from 8.9% in 2024, according to a Commonwealth Fund survey, the Alaska Beacon reports in a story from Stateline.

The rise is largely blamed on the expiry of enhanced federal subsidies for Affordable Care Act coverage at the end of last year, which had made plans free or nearly free for some people on low incomes. Marketplace coverage fell to 6% of working-age adults and Medicaid enrolment to 13%.

Half of the 7,362 people surveyed said they had put off medical care because of cost. Lead author Sara Collins called the findings very concerning. The uninsured rate is expected to rise further from January, when the One Big Beautiful Bill Act's Medicaid work requirements and six-monthly eligibility checks begin.
