The father who shot dead the teenage gunman at an elementary school in Bend, Oregon, has said he feels he failed the families of the children who died, PBS NewsHour reports, citing an Associated Press account of his interview with Oregon Public Broadcasting.
Kaylub Giamanco, a 36-year-old carpenter whose two daughters attend Silver Rail Elementary, said he was driving past on 15 October when he saw a gunman firing shots and heading for the building. He took a handgun from his truck, called 911 and crawled towards the school before entering through a shattered window.
He said he found a teacher struggling with the attacker and fired. Three children aged five, eight and 11 and a teacher were killed. Giamanco said he wanted to apologise for not saving everyone, while thanking people for their gratitude.
