Expert defends safety of natural gas buses after deadly Calgary crash

·

A transit research expert has said compressed natural gas buses remain a very safe technology, after a crash and explosion involving a Calgary Transit bus killed three people on Thursday.

A bus struck several vehicles and then ran into the back of a parked bus, which exploded. More than a dozen people were hurt, including a police officer who ran towards the fire. One of the buses ran on compressed natural gas.

Josipa Petrunic, head of the Canadian Urban Transit Research and Innovation Consortium, told Global News that close to 1,000 such buses operate in Canada with built-in leak and fire safeguards, and that investigators must establish what went wrong. Manufacturer Nova Bus said it was too early to speculate and that it was cooperating with the investigation. About a fifth of Calgary's fleet uses the fuel.
